0-375 Cooking & Fishing Guide
Introduction
I have written this guide to help you level your Fishing and Cooking skills from 0 to 375 with as little trouble as possible. With other guides I have seen, you need to have a character at level 70 to be able to reach your max skill level in fishing and cooking. I completed all the parts of this guide before I reached level 62.
NOTE: This guide currently covers the Alliance side, but I am working on Horde specific instructions. I will add Horde information soon.
You can level Fishing and Cooking separately, but my experience is that you will be best served by doing them together. I have tried to put this guide together in the order that will allow you to level up your skill in the least amount of time, money, and travel.
How To Fish
- You must be at least level 5 to learn fishing.
- Fishing is based on the number of fish you catch. It does not matter where you fish or what kind of fish you catch. You can fish in the safest area in the capital City or anywhere else and if you catch fish, you will level your fishing skill.
- Fishing is classed as a secondary profession. This means learning to fish does not affect your ability to learn any other professions.
- Next, find a Fishing Trainer. You will find these trainers in every capital city and in many other zones. These trainers are usually found near fishing spots, so look for them near water. If you have trouble finding one, you can always ask a guard for directions. Learn the Apprentice Fishing skill from the trainer. This will cost about 1 silver.
- You can’t fish without a fishing pole, so look around for a Fishing Suppliers or Trade Suppliers. Most Fishing Trainers usually have a fishing supplier standing close to them. If you have the money, it also helps to buy and use a few lures.
- To fish, stand next to a body of water. Your feet must be on dry land - you cannot be swimming. Equip your new fishing pole by right clicking on it from your inventory. Next, click on your fishing icon, either from your spell book, or from your action bar if you have dragged it there. This will allow you to cast a line into the water. If your cast is successful, you will see a bobber appear in the water. Now wait for the bobber to splash. As soon as the bobber splashes, right click once on the bobber to reel in your fish.

How To Cook Food
- You must be at least level 5 to learn cooking.
- To increase your cooking skill, you must acquire Recipes, then find the listed ingredients, and then prepare the food by cooking it.
- Cooking is classed as a secondary profession. This means learning to fish does not affect your ability to learn any other professions.
- Next, find a Cooking Trainer. You will find these trainers in every capital city and in many other zones. These trainers are usually found near Inns or Taverns. If you have trouble finding one, you can always ask a guard for directions. Learn the Apprentice Cooking skill from the trainer. This will cost about 1 silver.

- You can’t cook without fire. You must be standing close to a source of heat, such as a bon fire, stove, fireplace, etc. If you can’t find a convenient fire nearby, you can always make your own. To make a fire you need Flint and Tinder and Simple Wood. The Flint and Tinder is never consumed so you only need to buy one. However, 1 x Simple Wood is used for every fire you make. They are very inexpensive to buy, but they do take up slots in your bags. Once you have trained in cooking, you will have the Basic Campfire ability on the general tab of your spell book. Just click the icon and 10 seconds late… Voila! Fire!
- To cook, stand next to your fire or stove and bring up the cooking window from the general tab in your spell book. Select a recipe from your available choices. Click on the create button. If you have the necessary ingredients in your inventory, you will be successful. That’s all there is to it.
Let the Leveling Begin
Now that we have the basic equipment and ability, let’s get started.
Apprentice Skill Level 0-75
- Find a low level pool of water and start fishing. This can be any newbie zone or capital city, etc.
- OK, It will take you about 20 minutes of Fishing to reach level 75 Fishing Skill. During that time I caught 47 Raw Brilliant Smallfish and 28 Raw Longjaw Mud Snappers. Keep fishing until you have about 10 more Raw Brilliant Smallfish. This is just to make sure you can reach a skill level of 50 when you level your cooking.
- Next, find yourself a fire or stove and cook up all the Raw Brilliant Smallfish.
- Once your cooking skill reaches 50, you can learn the Recipe: Longjaw Mud Snappers. You can acquire it from one of the following vendors:

- Next, find yourself a fire or stove and cook up the Raw Longjaw Mud Snappers until your skill level reaches 75.
- This is as high as you can go in Fishing until you hit level 10 with your character.
Journeyman Skill Level 76-150
- Once you reach level 10 with your character, you will need to learn Journeyman’s Skill in Cooking and Fishing.
- For Journeyman’s Cooking, you will need to train at one of the following locations:

- You will now be able to train both Cooking and Fishing to 150 skill level.
- Next I recommend you travel to Loch Modan. When you first arrive, make sure you get the flight path in Thelsamar. Next visit the Stoutlager Inn where you will need to buy about 40 Mild Spice from Drac Roughcut. You will need these later when we start cooking up some Loch Renzy.
- Next run down to the lake where you will meet both Warg and Khara Deepwater at coordinates (40,39). You will buy the Recipe: Loch Frenzy Delight from Khara. It took me 45 minutes of fishing to take my skill from 75 to 150. During that time, I caught 84 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper, 46 Raw Loch Frenzy, 18 Raw Brilliant Smallfish, and 25 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish.
- Now go inside the building behind you and cook up your fish. First cook up the Brilliant Smallfish. This is a green skill so you probably won't gain much, but it doesn't cost anything and the fish are practically worthless at this point. Next cook up the remaining Longjaw Mud Snapper. They will go green at a skill level 110, but you may as well use them all up. Next cook up the Loch Frenzy Delight until they are gone.
- At this point, we need to get our character level to 20, so go do some leveling.
- Before you reach level 20, make a trip to Stormwind City and purchase the Recipe: Bristle Whisker Catfish from Catherine Leland at coordinates (45,58). While you are in Stormwind, also visit Trias Cheese shop located at coordinates (60,63) and buy 20 Alterac Swiss which you will need for your Artisan quest. Finally, you will also want to pick up a couple of Water Breathing Elixir from the Auction House.
- After you reach level 20, we will need to make a couple of trips to acquire the books we need for our expert levels.
- First we will go to Booty Bay. Once there, find Old Man Heming who is located in the Happy Bobber store which is on the bottom floor in Booty Bay at coordinates (27,77). He will sell you a book titled: “Expert Fishing - The Bass and You.” Read the book and you will acquire a new ability: Fishing (Expert).
- Next head to Mystral Lake which is in Ashenvale. Once there, find Shandrina in the Silverwind Refuge at coordinates (9,67) and buy the Expert Cookbook. Read it and you will learn a new ability: Cooking (Expert).
- At this point, go ahead and learn the Recipe: Bristle Whisker Catfish. Cook your Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish until you hit a skill of 150.
Expert Skill Level 125-225
- We will need to catch some more Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish to get our cooking up to 175, and there are several places to catch them. However, my favorite spot (24,53) is at the Lake next to Stormgard in the Arathi Highlands, because you can catch the catfish as well as Raw Mithril Head Trout which are used in our next cooking recipe.
- To get to this fishing spot, fly or run to Southshore. While there, visit Lindea Rabonne who is on the dock at (50,60). She will sell you the Recipe: Mithril Head Trout. You will be able to learn it after you reach 175 in cooking skill. Now get back on the road to the Stormgard lakes.
- This spot is fairly safe from monsters while you are fishing, but there are several level 30 to 35 mobs on the way, so be careful.
- Just for reference, I needed to catch another 80 of the catfish to level my cooking skill from 150 to 175.Once you reach 175 skill, learn the Recipe: Mithril Headed Trout. You will now begin cooking trout all the way to skill level 225. When you reach 225, stop cooking. You can use the rest of the trout to gain skill after you get your Artisan level.
- Your fishing skill will still be less than 225, but we will wait until we reach our next spot to gain more points. That way we can be catching the fish that we need to gain more cooking skill.
- If you are not yet at level 35, then this is as far as you can go. If you are level 35+ then you have two quests to complete before you can continue.
Artisan Skill Level 225-300
- First, we will do our Artisan Cooking quest, so fly or run to Gadgetzan in Tanaris. Find Dirge Quikcleave who is standing inside the tavern at coordinates (52,28). Get the quest: Clamlette Surprise from him. He'll want you to bring him 12 Giant Eggs, 10 Zesty Clam Meat and 20 Alterac Swiss. I hope you hung on to the Alterac Swiss you bought earlier.
- The Giant Eggs drop off of Rocs in Tanaris. You will find lots of these flying around any of the giant bones sticking out of the desert. You can find them at coordinates (49,35), (42,41), (48,43), and lots of other places as well.
- Next we will go to Steamwheedle Port which is located on the coast east of Gadgetzan. When you get there, find Gikkix at coordinates (66,22). You will need about 8 gold to buy 3 recipes from him. They are: Spotted Yellowtail, Poached Sunscale Salmon, and Nightfin Soup.
- Now just start fishing next to the Steamwheedle dock until you reach level 225 in fishing skill. You will catch several different kind of fish here including: Raw Spotted Yellowtail, Big-mouth Clam, Raw Glossy Mightfish, Stonescale Eel, Winter Squid, and others.
- As you catch the Big-mouth Clam, open them to see what’s inside. Often they will contain Zesty Clam Meat. When you reach a fishing skill of 225, you may still need a few more of the Zestyy Clam Meat. If so, then kill the Steeljaw Turtles in the area because they also drop the Big-mouth Clams. When you have enough clam meat, head back to Gadgetzan.
- Find Dirge Quikcleave and turn in quest, Clamlette Surprise. You should now have a new ability: Cooking (Artisan).
- Next we need to cook up all those fish we have been keeping. So find the house at located at (51,28). Inside you will find a stove you can use for cooking. Start with the Mithril Headed Trout that you have left over from our last fishing spot. This should raise your skill to about 250. Next, cook the Spotted Yellowtail. You should have quite a few of these in your bag from Steanwheedle Port. This should be enough to raise your cooking skill to about 270 or more.
- OK, now we need to head over to Theramore to pick up theArtisan Fishing Quest. When you arrive in Theramore, the first thing you should do is bind at the inn. Next, jump off the dock and swim southwest to a small island at coordinates (58,60) where you will find Nat Pagle who is located at Nat's Landing. He will give you the quest: Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme.
- This quest will require you to catch four rare fish for Nat. These are: Misty Reed Mahi Mahi, Sar'theris Striker, Feralas Ahi, and the Savage Coast Blue Sailfin. We will have to do some traveling, so let’s get started.
- First, Fly to Feathermoon Stronghold. While there, go inside the building and find Vivianna at coordinates (31,43). She will sell you the recipes: Mightfish Steak, Baked Salmon, and Lobster Stew. You should also pick up a few lures while you are there.
- Next take the boat or swim over to Feralas. Get on the road and travel to the east until you reach the bridge over the river at coordinates (63,51). I caught a Feralas Ahi right below the bridge, on my first cast with no lure.
- Head back to Feathermoon Stronghold and fly to Nijel’s Point located in Desolace. From there, head for the coast where you will find Sar'theris Strand. Fish till you catch a Sar'theris Striker. I caught mine at coordinates (36,34), after only 2 casts.
- OK, we are going to take a slight detour while we are in Desolace. There is a very nice fishing pole that can be found off the coast to the southwest of the horde town of Shadowprey Village. Go ahead and head south to the beach below the village and move out into the water. Hopefully, you will have a couple of Water Breathing Elixir. If so, this would be the time to drink one. This area is called the Veiled Sea. Swim down to the ocean floor and you should begin to see Lobster Traps. Just swim around and open them. It will take a while, but eventually you will find a Big Iron Fishing Pole, which adds +20 to your fishing skill. It took me a little more than an hour to find my Big Iron Fishing Pole. I found mine at coordinates (19,85), although it can supposedly pop from any Shellfish trap. I had looted this particular trap many, many times before it popped.
- Return to Nijel’s Point and fly to Rachet. From there, you will take the boat to Booty Bay.
- OK, from Booty Bay, run north along the east coast of Starnglethorn until you reach the Savage Coast. Once you reach the Savage Coast, it doesn't matter where you fish. I caught my Savage Coast Blue Sailfin at coordinates (34,34) after 4 ties.
- Head back to Booty Bay and fly to Darkshire.
- Follow the road that lead out of Darkshire to the east. Travel completely through Deadwind Pass until you come to the Swamp of Sorrows. Once you enter the swamp, continue all the way east until you come to the coast and find the Misty Reed Strand. Any where along the coast is fine as long as you are in the Misty Reed Strand. I was at location 90,23 and caught a Misty Reed Mahi Mahi on the 3rd cast.
- Now you will use your Hearthstone to recall to Theramore. Once there, return to Nat Pagle, and turn in the quest. You have learned a new ability: Fishing (Artisan).
- Return to Theramore and stop off at the inn to buy some Refreshing Spring Water. You will need about 30 or 40 of these.
- Next travel to either Talonbranch Glade or Emerald Sanctuary in Felwood. You can fish in any of the pools and streams here and you should be catching lots of Raw Nightfin Snapper and Raw Sunscale Salmon, and others. Fish here until you reach a fishing skill of at least 280. You could fish all the way to 300 if you want. When you reach a skill of 280 in fishing, go ahead and cook all your fish. This should raise your cooking skill to about 290.
- OK, Once you get your Fishing skill up to about280 base, plus 20 for your Big Iron Fishing Pole, plus the 75 or 100 for your lure, you will have enough skill to fish effectively in Azshara.
- To get to our next spot, fly or run to Talrendis Point, which is located in Azshara. From there, follow the road to the east. Keep going until you reach the ocean. Swim out to Scalebeard’s Cave which is located at (53,49). This is where you will fish until you reach skill level 300.
- Here you will catch Winter Squid, Darkclaw Lobster, Stonescale Eels, Large Raw Mightfish and others. Once you reach 300 fishing, just cook up any of the available fish from your bag and you will easily reach 300 in cooking skill.
Master Skill Level 300-375
Congrats on making 300 skill in both cooking and fishing. To advance your skill any higher, you must have the Expansion for Burning Crusades.
The next steps in our quest for fishing and cooking perfection will take place in the Outland. Most of the fishing holes here will require very high fishing skill to avoid get aways, so make sure you stock up on Bright Baubles and Aquadynamic Fish Attractors.
Getting Started
- To get started, you must travel thru the portal that is located in the Blasted Lands. Once you are thru the portal, ride the griffin to the Honor Hold. At Honor Hold, find Gaston at loc 54,63 inside the inn. You will buy the Master Cookbook from him for 2 gold. This book will allow you to train your cooking up to a skill level of 375. You have learned a new ability: Cooking (Master).
- Next, we need to get a series of quests from Legassi who is located at the Zepplin Crash Site (49,74). Basically, he wants you to gather the ingredients for his breakfast. The quests are: Step 1: Ravager Egg Roundup, Step 2: Helboar, the Other White Meat, and Step 3: Smooth as Butter. When you complete step 3, you will receive the Recipe: Buzzard Bites, which is what we want.
- You will finds tons of Bonestripper Buzzards in the Valley of Bones, just outside Honor Hold at (63,65). This is a good way to level cooking because the buzzards are close to the Honor Hold, and easy to kill. Kill the buzzards until you have 20 of the Buzzard Meat. Find a fire and cook them up. This will bring your cooking skill to 320.
- Next we need to get our Book for Training Fishing. So, run west until you get to the next zone which is where you will find Cenarion Refuge. Here you will find the fisherman Juno Dufrain at location 78,65. He is just to the west next to the Lake.
- The Master Fishing - The Art of Angling will cost you 5 Gold. This will allow you to train your fishing skill to 375. Go ahead and buy the recipe: Blackened Sporefish.
- This area spawns pools of fish called “schools”. There are schools for Zangarian Sporefish and for Spotted Feltail. If you have the “Find Fish” talent then you can use that. Otherwise just run along the bank and look for the schools. While fishing in these schools, you will sometimes catch, “Huge Spotted Feltail” and “Enormous Barbed Gill Trout”. When ever you catch one of these rare fish, keep it, because we will need them to finish off our cooking skills later.
- We have two goals fishing in this area. First, we want to bring our fishing skill to 310 or higher. Secondly, we want to catch enough Zangarian Sporefish to raise our cooking skill to at least 335.
- Once you have 310 Fishing skill and 335 Cooking skill, we will make our way south from the Cenarion Refuge. At (80,85) you will find a sign pointing the way to Shattrath and the Terokkar Forest. Continue in that direction. Soon after you enter the Terokkar Forrest, you will top a rise and view the mighty city of Shattrath below you. You can visit the city and get the flight path or continue on the road to the left.
- Head east from the city on the road towards Shadowmoon Valley. You will pass the Cenarion Thicket. Keep going until you approach Tuurem. You will need to go around Tuurem on the south until you hit the road heading south to until you reach the Allerian Stronghold (57,53).
- Once you are inside the Allerian Stronghold, go visit Innkeeper Biribi at (56,53. You can buy the Recipe: Golden Fish Sticks.
- You can fish for Golden Darters right from the water next to the stronghold in perfect safety. I fished for them at loc (57,52). We are going to fish here for about 2 to 3 hours. Our goal is to get our fishing and Cooking skills to 355 or higher. You should be able to gain about 15 skill points per hour in fishing.
- When you hit 355 in Fishing, find a fire and cook up the Golden Fish Sticks. The Golden Fish Sticks go green at cooking skill of 355. You will have many more than you need, so you can keep cooking them until they go grey if you want, or sell them at the Auction house for cash.
- Next, head back to Shattrath City and find the barmaid Kylene located inside the World's End Tavern in the Lower City (74,32). She will sell you 2 recipes: Fisherman's Feast and Hot Buttered Trout. Both of these require 350 or higher skill in cooking.
- We have finally reached the home stretch. All that is left to do is return to Zangarmarsh and fish the schools until you hit a fishing skill of 375. By the time you reach your cap in fishing, you will have plenty of “Huge Spotted Feltail” and “Enormous Barbed Gill Trout”. Cook these fish up and you will easily hit 375 Cooking skill.
